Programme

First Phase: global survey (2003 – 2004)

Some critical success factors for promoting high-value mountain products were identified. These include collective action, access to support services, innovation, equity, market information, entrepreneurial skills, enabling environments with supportive policies and risk mitigation.

Second Phase : Analysis of promising products (2004 – 2005)

During the second phase of the Mountain Products Programme, research was focused on the following regions: North Africa and the Middle East, the Andes, East Africa, Central Asia and the Hindu Kush Himalaya. In each region, FAO worked with institutional partners to select and analyse promising mountain products.

Third Phase: Projects in pilot countries (2006 – 2008)

In the third phase the Mountain Products Programme formulated and implemented field projects in pilot countries (Morocco, Kyrgyzstan) as well as developing the Mediterranean Resource Centre (www.cybermontagne.org), a web-based information platform for Mediterranean countries.
