Consortium for Sustainable Development in the Andes Ecoregion (CONDESAN)

The Consortium for Sustainable Development in the Andes Ecoregion (CONDESAN), promotes equitable rural development based on sustainable natural resource management in the Andean ecoregion. The Consortium, based at the International Potato Center (CIP) in Peru links nearly 100 institutions from 17 Latin American countries, with a focus on applied research, information exchange, and policy development. Its primary focus is on the zones above 2000 metres above sea level in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. Web site


International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM)

The International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) is an international organization, dedicated to postgraduate and specialized education, applied research and the development of Mediterranean agriculture. CIHEAM’s areas of specialization include food production and quality management, environment and natural resources management, economics, management and development policies, and fisheries and aquaculture. CIHEAM is comprised of four research institutes in Bari (Italy), Montpelier (France), Zaragoza (Spain) and Chania (Greece). Web site


International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, based in Kathmandu, Nepal, aims to promote the development of an economically and environmentally sound mountain ecosystem and to improve the living standards of mountain populations, especially in the Hindu-Kush Himalayas. As such, ICIMOD acts as a multi disciplinary documentation centre, a focal point for training and applied research activities and a consultative centre in scientific and technical matters.

Mgahinga and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Conservation Trust (MBIFCT)

The Mgahinga and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Conservation Trust (MBIFCT) manages and administer a fund to promote long-term conservation of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP) and the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, both situated in South-Western Uganda. The two parks are among the most biologically diversed tropical forests in East Africa and represent the dwindling Afro-montane and Afro-alpine ecosystems. In addition, more than a half of the world’s endangered mountain gorilla population is found in the two parks. Web site


Migrations et Développement

The NGO, Migrations & Développement was created in 1986 by a group of factory migrant workers in the southern French Alps who together raised funds to support the development of their village in Morocco. Migrations &Développement is now a network of some 400 local associations in five mountainous areas of Morocco. It works with various financial partners to strengthen local development through, amongst other activities, the promotion of mountain products and services, such as saffron production, craftmaking and rural tourism. Rural Development Centre (RDC-Elet) – Kyrgyzstan

The Rural Development Centre (RDC-Elet)  supports social cultural, and educational initiatives to alleviate rural poverty in Central Asia. The Centre focuses on assisting poor communities build and develop their own capacity to mobilise resources, develop knowledge networks and build skills for improving their livelihood opportunities. It also facilitates links between rural communities, local government bodies, businesses other NGOs, and international donor organisations in order to create real partnerships for development and poverty reduction. Soluciones Practicas (ITDG – Peru)

Soluciones Prácticas (ITDG-Peru), the Peru-based office of the international NGO Practical Action (ITDG), specializes in helping people use technology for practical answers to poverty. ITDG’s work in Latin America is mostly carried out in the mountain areas of Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru with programme areas focussing on markets and livelihoods, disaster mitigation and local management, infrastructure and services, and new technologies.
