In November 2001, a meeting of more than 70 representatives of research institutions and governmental, non-governmental and rural organizations from all the Andean countries and elsewhere was held in Merida. The aim of the meeting was to form an international network for the exchange of information and experiences and definition of strategies of action on the conservation and appropriate management of the Andean high mountain humid grasslands, the Paramo. The meeting consolidated the creation of the Paramo Group, an international network of people, institutions and projects working on Paramo. The first activity of the Group will be to set up a Paramo database with information on all of the actors and ongoing activities in each country.

'The IV Symposium of Sustainable Development in the Andes: the Andean Strategy for the 21st century', organized by the Andean Mountain Association, was held in Merida in December 2001. The aim of the symposium was to analyse the challenges and opportunities that face the Andean region in the 21st century. Participants from 24 countries around the world issued the Merida Declaration.
