Priority sustainable development concerns in the mountain regions of Guatemala are the rapid rate of deforestation and the lack of roads and consequent isolation of mountain communities.

A project,'Conservation of Strategic Forest Ecosystems of Guatemala', is currently being implemented by the Instituto Nacional de Bosques (INAB) to protect the country's forests. The Institute is also engaged in an integrated water resources management plan with the project,'Tierras Forestales de Captación Hidrica'. This is to be implemented over an area amounting to nearly 60% of national territory. The Institute intends to continue its focus on the conservation of forest ecosystems within the Programme for Protected Areas (SIGAP).
