National Committee

A permanent committee entitled the 'Foro Permanente de Montaña' (NOA) was formed in February 2002. It was considered important that all sectors participate in the committee - the Government, NGOs, research institutions as well as representatives of indigenous communities. The national committee wanted local communities to be well- represented in order to receive their input in the formulation of development strategies, and so encourage the federal governments to prioritize sustainable mountain development.

Activities and Achievements during the International Year of Mountains

International

During the global conference 'High Summit 2002' organized by the Italian National Committee, Argentina hosted the Latin American conference (one of five venues held around the world) from the Regional Centre of Scientific and Technological Research in Mendoza (6-10 May).

Interregional

A regional conference of scientists and other academics, NGOs and representatives of indigenous communities was held in Horco Molle (9 -12 June to discuss the threats to mountain ecosystems.

Beyond the International Year of Mountains

The objective of the permanent National Committee was to set out a strategy for sustainable development of mountain ecosystems based upon new policies for the management of natural resources, the occupation of land and the safeguarding of the natural, cultural and historical heritage of mountain peoples.

At the end of the International Year of Mountains the National Committee presented the Government with a list of recommendations. The Government was urged to learn from industrialized countries about the management of mountain areas, particularly the mining and tourism sectors. Recommendations included the creation of research centres at regional level to assess the state of mountain ecosystems, the reinforcing of existing networks as a basis for the creation of a Regional Institute of Mountains, and the promotion of the exchange of knowledge and experience on these issues at home and abroad.
