Activities and Achievements during the International Year of Mountains
The opening event for the International Year of Mountains included a screening of films about mountains and mountain life in Austria, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, France and Slovenia. A summary of activities organized throughout Slovenia in 2002 follows.
National
- First International Festival of Mountaineering Films, Bled, familiarized people with mountain hiking and climbing themes.
- The Geotrip Campaign 2002, comprising over 50 events, raised public awareness about the importance of protecting the Slovenian mountains as a natural heritage and resource, as well as protecting the beauty of the landscape and the habitat of plants and animals.
- A renovated village cheese-making shop was opened in the mountain village of Cadrg, where Tolminc cheese - one of the few native Slovenian cheeses - has been made for many centuries. This is an important contribution to the development of traditional local products that meet European standards.
- The Slovenian Forest Service opened four new trails that provide an insight into the substance of forest ecosystems - in addition to the 70 study trails it already manages - to mark International Year of Mountains.
- The main event marking the International Year of Mountains in Slovenia was organised by the Mountaineering Association of Slovenia and attracted around 6,000 participants. It included exhibitions, book presentations and the opening of the Jurek Trail.
- The Mountaineering Association of Slovenia marked International Year of Mountains with a continuation of the project 'Environmental rehabilitation of mountain lodges'. These mountain lodges are undergoing a transition to clean sources of energy.
- Educational activities
- Educational material for primary schools was also prepared in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund, and an art competition was held nationwide.
- 'Young ranger', a pilot project of the Europarc Federation, familiarised young people who live in or near national parks with the purposes of protected areas. As part of this project, children were invited on a ten-day camp in the Triglav National Park under the slogan 'let's clean up our mountains'.
Promotional activities
The Slovenian postal service issued a series of commemorative postage stamps
Research
Forestry and agriculture are the most important socio-economic activities in Slovenia's Alpine areas. The Forest Institute of Slovenia initiated a research project focused on the sustainable development of Slovenia's Alpine area, based on an analysis of the condition and trends of Alpine ecosystems and socio-economic circumstances.
