Slovenia

A third of Slovenia's territory is situated within the Alps and nearly a million people - 47 percent of the country's total population - live in mountainous areas. Slovenia is also one of the most densely forested countries in Europe, with 56 percent forest cover.

The Government of Slovenia is committed to the preservation of mountain areas and to working towards the objectives of International Year of Mountains beyond 2002. For example, the National Programme on Protection of Environment, the Forest Development Programme and the Development Programme for Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery 2000-2002 all contain strategies formulated for sustainable mountain development.

From the outset Slovenia has been actively involved in the regional process of the Alpine Convention, and has collaborated in the process of drawing up a series of protocols towards sustainable mountain development and the protection of mountain areas.
