Preparatory Activities for the International Year of Mountains

In November 2000, Slovakia organized an International Conference, 'Sustainable Development - New Millennium Challenge', in which a National Sustainable Development Strategy for the Slovak Republic was proposed, as well as a Regional Agenda 21 for the Central Hron Watershed. Local sustainable development projects were also presented at the event.

In September 2001, a meeting was held in Kosice to present ideas for International Year of Mountains projects. This event was co-organised by the Carpathian Foundation and European Mountain Forum with the support of UNEP.

Activities and achievements beyond the International Year of Mountains

The recently launched campaign, 'Save the Natural Forest in Slovakia', aims to influence a change in legislation for greater forest protection.
