Austria

Some 67 percent of Austrian territory is mountainous, and around 1,200 communities are located in those areas. The country has a long tradition of developing mountain- related policies as well as undertaking research on mountain issues: it considers the balancing of ecology, economy and socio-cultural aspects to be amongst the most pressing concerns in the management of its mountain regions.

Austria is also engaged in international initiatives that address mountain issues; for example, the country is a signatory of the Alpine Convention.

Austria's international cooperation with developing countries has a special focus on 19 countries, most of which are largely mountainous (e.g. in the Himalaya region).
