Andorra established a national committee for the International Year of Mountains. The Andorran National Committee for the International Year of Mountains was created with the aim of organizing and bringing new energy to a series of activities within
the framework of the International Year of Mountains.

Activities and achievements during International Year of Mountains
International:
- The Andorran National Committee collaborated on the project 'Bolivia 2002', in which French and Andorran firemen trained colleagues from the La Paz area, and also donated equipment. These firemen were honoured by the Government of Bolivia for their rescue work.
- The Principality also contributed to the programme for the development of cultural ecotourism in mountain regions in the process of development, a sum amounting to between 2% and 4% of the total budget.
National:
Several conferences were held alongside the traditional Andorran livestock trade fair, on themes such as the development of tourism and the durability of the mountain environment, as well as on issues more specific to agriculture in the
region.
Educational:
A series of educational activities were organized for the 2002-2003 school year. These activities, including excursions, exhibitions, lectures, discussion groups, aimed to encourage young people to develop a critical sense about the management of the
environment and sustainable mountain development in theircountry and beyond.
Civil Society:
- The 4th International Conference of the Environment in Andorra, organized by the Centre of Biodiversity of the Institut d'Etudes Andorranes, discussed challenges posed by ecotourism in mountain regions.
- A special day dedicated to hiking in the mountains was organized in collaboration with all the communities of the Fédération Andorrane de la Montagne. (29 September 2002), in order to familiarize citizens with their mountains.
Promotional activities for International Year of Mountains:
- Collaboration with the 2002 edition of the PIRENE prize for journalism.
- Publication of a bibliography of works on the theme of mountains, held in all the public libraries in the country.
- Vertical Cross (12 June) and Mountain Rally (21 July) organized by the Fédération Andorrane de la Montagne.
- Commemorative stamp issued together with Spanish Postal system.
- Commemorative telephone card issued.
