Mountain Partnership

Ukraine

Ukraine lies within the Carpathian mountain region. The country recognises that it needs to address a series of priority issues; the conservation of biodiversity, compensation for environmental damage already caused, and the creation of policies and laws to safeguard mountain ecosystems and to assist mountain populations towards sustainable livelihoods.

The Government of Ukraine aims to promote the Carpathian Mountains as a recreation zone for the population of central and eastern Europe. One of the ways in which this will be achieved is through the introduction of environmentally friendly technologies to reduce the industrial impact on the region. International cooperation from all Carpathian countries is essential, and some results from this cooperation have already been achieved. In 1993, a project financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) 'Conservation of Biodiversity in the Carpathians' was signed. top
