Mountain Partnership

Spain

As one of the most mountainous countries in Europe, Spain intends to guarantee the protection of its mountain areas for the future and to use the impetus provided by International Year of Mountains to develop a strategy for sustainable mountain development.

For many years, support for the inhabitants of mountain districts has one of the priority objectives of the Catalan government, and a General Policy Programme for the Mountains has been set up to coordinate and encourage action taken in support of mountain dwellers.

One of the NGOs currently involved in sustainable mountain development in Spain is the Territory and Landscape Foundation, a non-profit organization. Based in Barcelona, the Foundation aims to create a network of private nature reserves in Spain, similar to other land trusts in European and North American countries, as well as providing support to other organizations for conservation projects and promoting environmental education and awareness. One of its current projects is to create an environmental education and nature conservation centre in the heart of the Pyrenees.
