It is a landlocked country, bordering Serbia to the north, Albania to the west, Greece to the south, and Bulgaria to the east. The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is a mainly mountainous: approximately 80% of the country consists of hills and mountains and the average altitude of the country’s terrain is 850 metres. Most of the arable land is cultivated by small farmers (average farm size 1-3 ha). Recent political events -- including the 1999 Kosovo crisis and the 2001 ethnic Albanian armed insurgency – delayed economic reform and development activities.
