Activities and achievements during the International Year of Mountains
National
- A Symposium on the Mountains of Sri Lanka was held at the Ambuluwawa biodiversity complex (31 March). This complex located on the biodiversity-rich mountain of Ambuluwawa was the latest addition to the country's national botanical gardens.
- A series of seminars and lectures were organized throughout the year by the Centre for Eco-cultural studies based in Sigiriya. The target audience was the general public with special emphasis on schoolchildren. The potentially damaging effects of tourism were highlighted in many of these national initiatives.
Educational:
An essay competition on the importance of mountains was run throughout the country.
