National Committee

The Government of Pakistan established a national committee for the International Year of Mountains. The lead agency for International Year of Mountain events was the Ministry of Environment. Events were planned in order to link with celebrations of the International Year of Ecotourism.

Highlight of activities and achievements during the International Year of Mountains

International

An International Conference on Mountain Infrastructure and Technology held in Gilgit (26-30 August highlighted successful mountain experiences, explored the role of technology and the creation of local infrastructures to sustain and support the development of mountain communities, and outlined challenges for the future.

National

A clean-up drive of Ayubia National Park at Ayubia and Donga Gali aimed to raise awareness among local people and visitors about the importance of mountain conservation. (19 -21 July). A hundred volunteers and 100 scouts participated and managed to collect more than two tons of non-biodegradable waste.

A National Conference on Sustainable Mountain Development was held at Muzaffarabad in order to discuss mountain issues, challenges and policies (September).

A Seminar on 'The Role of Market Forces in the Depletion of Forest Resources' was held in Chitral (September). The specific aim of the seminar was to discuss the importance of oak, Chalghoza pine, deodar, juniper and birch forests, the role of nomads, furniture trades, commercial harvests and forest laws.

A National Conference on sustainable mountain development was held in Islamabad (December), to discuss policy influence and advocacy.

A reforestation project was launched in the state of Azad Jammu and Kashmir AJK by the Al-Abbas Welfare Society and Development Foundation (around fifty thousand trees were planted).
To celebrate the Year the Government of Pakistan reduced the royalty fee for climbing mountains above 6,000 metres by 50 percent.
