Ghana established a national committee for the International Year of Mountains (2002). It was coordinated by the Ghana Wildlige Society and comprised a broad cross-section of UN organizations, government agencies, national and international NGOs and local groups of Chiefs.
The celebration for the Year was marked at a ceremony at Akropong, Mpenease with the theme, 'Mountains, people and livelihoods: using mountains wisely'. The proposed follow-up activities included the development of a national mountain conservation strategy and the development of new initiatives in mountain areas to improve the well-being of local people and to ensure adequate protection of the environment.
