In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), civil strife and insecurity continue to undermine the livelihoods and food security of the population. Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands displaced.
Given the country's equatorial climate and the high quality of its soil, the agricultural potential is great. In addition to fertile lands, DRC has an abundance of mineral resources, woods and lakes and rivers. But, despite its natural wealth, DRC ranked 168th out of 177 countries in the United Nations 2004 Human Development Report, with many citing persisting insecurity as the greatest threat to further development.
There is a serious humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Limited access to the affected populations, along with inadequate resources and a limited capacity for immediate response, has hampered the handling of the crisis.. But humanitarian assistance is essential to reinforce the peace process and help rehabilitate the war-torn country.
