Members of the Research initiative
Read about some members’ research focus
Much is known about the natural and social systems of mountain regions, but this information and knowledge tends to be fragmented among sources and themes and is not always well focussed on sustainable development. And there are important gaps in knowledge about key mountain issues which require greater attention by researchers.
The Research Initiative of the Mountain Partnership will work toward achieving a better coordination of on-going research and a better focus of research priorities which address the needs of the members of the Mountain Partnership. This work will include the wider dissemination of knowledge about existing mountain research programmes, researchers, institutions and funding sources for use by researchers, donors and stakeholders, and the establishment of a consultative process linking donors, stakeholders and researchers around key mountain research issues in order to increase funding opportunities.
Prior to the Second Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership, or ‘Cusco Conference’ (Peru, 28-29 October),leading members of the Research Initiative held a meeting for the first time to identify key issues and actions for the Initiative. The outputs of the workshop were further refined during the breakaway session dedicated to the Initiative at the Cusco Conference.
MOUNTAIN PARTNERSHIP MEMBERS EXPLORE MOUNTAIN RESEARCH
During 2005 and 2006, the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), a leading member of the Research Initiative, coordinated the preparation and analysis of a series of surveys, which explored the current status of mountain research as well as its future challenges.
Survey 1- 'Who is who in mountain research?'
This survey, completed by members of the Mountain Partnership Research Initiative only, determined members’ current priorities in mountain research -- their regional involvement, type of involvement and thematic focus -- in order to identify potential collaborative activities and steer the Research Initiative forward. Read the synthesis.
Survey 2- 'What future for mountain research?'
This second survey, open to all members of the Mountain Partnership, asked which issues and themes should be given priority in future mountain research. It addressed the core problems, opportunities and challenges of sustainable development that need to be tackled and the factors necessary to create an environment conducive to research. Discussion Paper – The Status and Future of Mountain Research
In February 2007, CDE released ‘The Status and Future of Mountain Research 2006’ (in English only) , which contains the results of both of these CDE-led surveys and is conceived as a basis for discussion among all members of the Mountain Partnership on the way forward in mountain research.
Mountain Partnership Meeting on Improving Coordination in Mountain Research Events and Activities
In December 2008, following a request from several Mountain Partnership members mainly from European research Institutes to define and agree on a mechanism to achieve better coordination concerning scientific events related to mountains and to improve collaboration on mountain focused research activities, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat organized a workshop. The outputs of the workshop can be read in the summary.
