The Mountain Partnership is supported by a Secretariat, which is hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and financed through contributions from the governments of Italy and Switzerland. The Secretariat is multi-stakeholder in composition, with staff inputs from FAO and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and strong collaboration with the Mountain Forum.
The Mountain Partnership Secretariat acts as a networking and liaison point for members, connecting people and activities in mountain development to ensure greater participation, coherence and impact. It does this by delivering key services: communication and information, knowledge management and brokerage. These services ensure that members have the knowledge and information necessary to participate effectively in the Mountain Partnership: communicating together, sharing knowledge, advocating for change and undertaking collaborative action on the ground.
In particular, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat plays a facilitating role in helping members build and develop Partnership Initiatives and ensures that it provides members with ready assistance when and how they need it.

The Secretariat collaborates closely with the Mountain Forum, an electronic network of networks in five regions that promotes sustainable mountain development through the delivery of electronic information and communication services — global, regional and thematic e-mail discussion lists , focused e-consultations, and an on-line library of mountain resources. In the context of the Mountain Partnership, the Forum manages the Mountain Calendar of Events , has implemented two global e-consultations for Mountain Partnership members (2003-2004), as well as recent e-consultations on Partnership Initiatives: the E-consultation on Biodiversity Conservation in the Hindu-Kush Himalaya (22 August - 2 October 2005) and the E-consultation on the Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development in Mountains (SARD-M) Initiative (17-21 October 2005). The Mountain Forum also promotes awareness about Mountain Partnership activities throughout the Mountain Forum membership at the global and regional level.
